Purifying a Shadow mons removes the 1.2× damage / damage-taken modifiers, lowers it by 2 effective levels, and bumps each IV by +2 (capping at 15). It also reduces power-up costs.
Cost depends on species — typically 1,000-5,000 Stardust + 1-3 candy per purify. Legendaries cost more.
The IV +2 bump means a Shadow with 13/13/13 base IVs becomes a Purified hundo (15/15/15). This is why "purifying for the hundo" is a real strategy — but only if you don't need the shadow attack bonus for raids.
See purify in action with the related Hundo Hunter tool.

Is Purify the same as in the main-series Pokémon games?
Mostly yes — but Pokémon GO has unique mechanics around catching, raids, and PvP that change how Purify works compared to the main-series games. See the full explanation above for GO-specific details.
