How to use Mega Evolution in Pokémon GO
To Mega-evolve, earn species-specific Mega Energy from Mega Raids, buddy walks, or Special Research. Each Mega lasts 8 hours and boosts all matching-type teammates by +10% damage in normal battles, +30% in raids.
Mega Evolution is a temporary 8-hour transformation for select species. Megas get massively boosted stats (+50-80% Attack) and sometimes change types. The first Mega evolution of a species costs more energy than subsequent ones.
The biggest reward is the roster-wide boost: any team member with a matching type to your Mega gets +10% damage (+30% in raids). Mega-evolving the right type before a Tier 5 raid is the single biggest force-multiplier in PvE.
- 1Choose your first Mega — prefer a type-versatile pick
Top first Megas: Beedrill (cheap), Charizard Y (Fire raids), Gengar (Ghost), Pidgeot (Flying), Houndoom (Dark/Fire). Each unlocks a different raid type advantage.
- 2Farm Mega Energy via raids + buddy walks
Mega Raids drop 30-50 energy per win. Walking with the species as buddy (after Mega-evolving once) drops 25 energy per 1 km. Special Research lines occasionally award 100-200 energy.
- 3Mega-evolve before a high-stakes raid
Activate your Mega at the gym before tapping the raid. The +30% raid damage boost applies to every matching-type attacker on your team. Mega Charizard Y for a Heatran raid = massive DPS uplift.
- 4Use the 8-hour window wisely
After Mega-evolving, you can't Mega another species for 8 hours (without using extra energy). Stack 2-3 raids in that window.
- 5After 8 hours, the species reverts
No permanent change. You can Mega again with another Energy charge. Subsequent evolutions cost less energy (50 → 20). The first evolution unlocks the discount.
- ▸Mega Energy is species-specific — Charizard X Energy can't Mega-evolve Charizard Y or anything else.
- ▸Use the Mega timer in the Pokédex to see your current Mega + remaining 8-hour window.
- ▸Primal evolutions (Groudon, Kyogre) work the same way but use Primal Energy.
