Master League team-building 2026 — full strategy

Why the Dialga / Mewtwo / Groudon meta core won't budge, and the 3 mons you should build around it.

PUBLISHED 2026-05-12

Master League in 2026 hasn't moved much from 2024 — it's still Dialga, Mewtwo, and Groudon. But the picks around them have shifted. Here's the data-driven approach to building a Master League team from scratch.

Master League is the most expensive league to build for in Pokémon GO PvP. Each maxed L50 + Best Buddy build costs ~750 000 Stardust + 300+ XL Candy. So picking the wrong 3 mons is a costly mistake. This post is the data-driven approach.

The meta core

Three Pokémon define Master League in 2026: Dialga, Mewtwo, and Groudon. Each anchors a different role:

  • Dialga: Steel/Dragon. Premier generalist lead. Dragon Breath spam + Iron Head + Draco Meteor. Almost every team runs it or has a hard counter.
  • Mewtwo: pure Psychic glass cannon. Psystrike + Shadow Ball coverage. Closes any team that can't handle Psychic damage in one burst.
  • Groudon: pure Ground. The hard answer to Dialga and the meta's anti-Steel pick. Precipice Blades is nuke.

Your team-building question is: do you build the meta core (Dialga + Mewtwo + Groudon)? Or do you build counters to it?

The standard build: meta core

The safest team is the meta core itself: hundo Dialga (lead) + hundo Groudon (safe-swap) + hundo Mewtwo (closer). This covers most matchups without surprises.

COST ESTIMATE

Building all three to L50 + Best Buddy + max moves: ~2.3M Stardust + ~900 XL Candy across all three species + 3 Elite Charged TMs for legacy moves. Multi-month project even with Spotlight Hour grinding.

The anti-meta build: counter the meta

If you assume every opponent runs the meta core, you can hard-counter it with: Garchomp (lead, anti-Dialga via Ground), Reshiram (anti-Dialga + anti-Steel via Fire), and Zekrom (Electric/Dragon, anti-Kyogre + anti-Steel-rare picks).

Why this works

Each anti-meta pick is built specifically to beat one or two of the meta core picks. Garchomp's Ground STAB is super-effective vs Dialga and Excadrill. Reshiram's Fire STAB beats Steels and Ice. Zekrom's Electric STAB beats Kyogre.

Hybrid teams (most common at Legend rank)

Legend-rank players almost always run one meta pick + two counters. The most common 2026 hybrid: Dialga (lead) + Groudon (safe-swap) + Mewtwo (closer) gets replaced with Dialga + Garchomp + Mewtwo. The Garchomp swap covers the Dialga mirror without losing meta presence.

Shadow variants

Shadows are often better than standard in Master League. Shadow Mewtwo trades 16.7% defense for 20% attack — the trade favors the attacker in ML because most fights resolve in 2-3 charged moves anyway, before bulk matters.

  • Shadow Mewtwo: ~10% more raid + PvP damage. Worth the TM cost.
  • Shadow Salamence + Shadow Dragonite: Outrage shadows are competitive with regular Rayquaza.
  • Shadow Tyranitar: Top non-Mega Dark attacker, also strong ML pick.

Tools to use during team-building

  • Use the PvP IV rank calculator to find rank-1 IV spreads for your candidate species — Master League is uncapped, so you want max stat product (15/15/15 is usually rank 1).
  • Use the PvP team-builder to check coverage + anti-meta scorecard before committing 750k dust to a single mon.
  • Use the trade reroll calculator to know if it's worth re-trading a 12/14/15 to a friend hoping for a hundo.
  • Check the meta page at /pvp/master quarterly — Niantic balance patches shift the meta, and we re-snapshot after every Season change.
TL;DR

Run Dialga + Groudon + Mewtwo if you want the safest hundo investment. Run Garchomp + Reshiram + Zekrom if you want to counter every other team running the meta. Or do the hybrid Dialga + Garchomp + Mewtwo for the best of both. Build hundos at L50 + Best Buddy.
