PvP meta methodology

How Hundo Hunter curates the top-12 picks per league.

SHORT ANSWER

PvP meta lists are curated quarterly from PvPoke ranking data plus Silph Arena tournament results — the cohort of high-rank players who actually drive meta convergence.

WHY PVPOKE + SILPH ARENA

PvPoke runs full simulations of every meta-vs-meta matchup and ranks species by aggregate win rate. This catches species that are good on paper but the wider playerbase hasn't adopted yet.

Silph Arena is the largest organized PoGO tournament series. Their meta usage stats reflect what real Legend-rank players actually bring to high-stakes games — which is often slightly more conservative than pure simulation rankings.

Combining both: PvPoke shows theoretical optimum, Silph Arena shows realized meta. We pick species that rank top-15 in both sources.

THE 12-PICK CUTOFF

Each league lists 12 meta picks. We pick 12 because:

  • You bring 3 mons per battle in GBL — 12 picks = 4 viable team compositions you can rotate through.
  • Below 12, meta dropoff is steep — #13 is usually a niche tech pick, not a generalist.
  • The cutoff is round and easy to remember — "top 12" rather than "top 14".
ROLES PER PICK

Every meta pick is annotated with one or more roles: Lead (the mons you start with), Safe-Swap (your pivot when the lead gets walled), Closer (your unshielded finisher).

These are derived from PvPoke's shield-scenario rankings. A "Lead" wins more matchups in the 1-shield-each scenario; a "Closer" wins more in the 0-shield scenarios.

Most picks fit multiple roles. The annotation is what the pick is best at, not the only thing it does.

UPDATE CADENCE

We re-snapshot the meta quarterly — every 3 months. PvP balance changes occur frequently in PoGO (Niantic adjusts move stats, releases new species, tweaks shield mechanics), and a quarterly cadence catches most shifts.

When a major balance patch ships mid-quarter, we add a one-off update.
